Matt Walls writes about the Rhône the way it deserves to be written about: with affection, yes, but also with a journalist’s insistence on evidence and a taster’s memory for nuance. He has made the region a speciality—covering it for Decanter, serving as Rhône panel chair at the Decanter World Wine Awards, and returning often enough to keep his feet on the ground (and his address book current). The strength of his approach is that it keeps the grand names—Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Châteauneuf—firmly in view while giving equal dignity to the lesser-sung corners that explain the region’s real complexity.
