Nuits-Saint-Georges vs Chambolle-Musigny - Session #6

The 2021 vintage in Burgundy offers fresh, terroir-driven Pinot Noirs with precision and elegance. This tasting explores two key villages of the Côte de Nuits through the wines of Pierre-Olivier Garcia (Nuits-Saint-Georges) and domaine Amiot-Servelle (Chambolle-Musigny), both producers committed to meticulous vineyard work and minimal intervention in the cellar.

The first flight focuses on the village appellations, highlighting the contrast between Chambolle-Musigny’s limestone-rich soils and east-facing slopes, which contribute to its finesse, and Nuits-Saint-Georges’ mix of limestone and clay, producing more structured wines.

The second flight compares two Premier Cru vineyards. Les Fuées in Chambolle-Musigny, located next to Bonnes-Mares, has a high proportion of oolitic limestone and sits at an altitude of 280-300 meters, benefiting from excellent drainage and a cooler microclimate. Aux Bousselots in Nuits-Saint-Georges, situated on the northern side near Vosne-Romanée, has well-drained clay-limestone soils at a slightly lower elevation, leading to a different expression of the terroir.

The third flight examines two additional Premier Crus. Aux Thorey, on the northern slopes of Nuits-Saint-Georges, has light, well-drained soils with a significant limestone component, allowing for good water retention and steady ripening. Les Borniques, positioned just below Musigny in Chambolle-Musigny, features thin, stony soils with high limestone content, contributing to its distinct character.
