ABV: 12.5–14%

Bottle Size: 750ml

Grape: Dolcetto

Region: Dolcetto d’Alba, Piedmont, Italy

Viticulture: Organic farming. Fruit from the 0.56-hectare Monrobiolo della Bussola and 0.2-hectare Rue parcels in Barolo, on clay soils with sand, tufa and limestone. Grapes are hand harvested and sorted in the vineyard.

Winemaking: Both parcels are fermented together in concrete for 8–12 days. Aged for 8–9 months in large neutral 2,500–5,000-litre botti. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.

Bartolo Mascarello is one of the great traditional names of Barolo, based in the village of Barolo itself. Bartolo, who died in 2005, became a symbol of resistance to fashion in the Langhe: loyal to long ageing, large old casks and, above all, the classical practice of blending parcels rather than bottling single vineyards.

Today the estate is run by his daughter Maria Teresa Mascarello, who has continued that same quiet, uncompromising line. The Barolo is drawn from historic sites including Cannubi, San Lorenzo, Rue and Rocche di La Morra, giving a wine that is more about harmony than display. It is floral, savoury, structured and deeply traditional, with the kind of transparency and patience that has made Bartolo Mascarello a benchmark for Barolo in its most classical form.
