Grape: Nebbiolo
Region: Barbaresco Pajé, Piedmont, Italy
Viticulture: Non-invasive farming without irrigation or fertilisation, with permanent grass cover. Old massal-selection vines from the highest rows of Pajé, on south- to south-west-facing calcareous marl with a high concentration of active limestone. Hand harvested in small crates.
Winemaking: Fermented in large wooden vats with an indigenous-yeast starter for around ten days, followed by 80–90 days of submerged-cap maceration. Aged for around eight years or longer in large neutral oak, depending on the vintage. No new oak. Bottled unfined and unfiltered.
Roagna is one of the most respected traditional estates in Piedmont, with deep roots in Barbaresco and important holdings also in Castiglione Falletto, in Barolo. Now led by Luca Roagna, the family has become closely associated with old vines, long macerations and a patient approach that puts vineyard character ahead of winemaking fashion.
The wines are built around Nebbiolo, especially from historic sites such as Pajè, Asili, Montefico and Pira. They carry a relatively light signature and unfold with time, showing rose, red fruit, herbs, spice, tar and a firm, savoury structure. Roagna’s best wines have the seriousness of traditional Piedmont, but also a etheral lift, making the estate one of the key references for Barbaresco and Barolo made with patience, restraint and real ageing potential.
