Domaine Jean-Louis Chave stands as one of the great historic names of the northern Rhône, its lineage of vignerons stretching back to 1481. Based in Mauves, but inseparable from the hill of Hermitage, the domaine is above all associated with Syrah of uncommon depth, savour and longevity. Its Hermitage is not the expression of a single parcel, but of a patiently assembled whole, drawn from several of the hill’s finest lieux-dits. The result is a wine of breadth rather than show: dark-fruited, mineral, quietly commanding and capable of ageing for decades, with the kind of authority that has made Chave a benchmark for the appellation itself.
