Alexander Mackh
Co-Founder & Designer
Alexander Mackh’s journey in wine began at his family’s hotel, where he experienced firsthand how wine enhances both everyday dining and special occasions. His passion for wine deepened during his hospitality studies at César Ritz Colleges in Switzerland, where he developed an interest in sourcing high-quality products and refining the art of pairing food and wine.
After completing his studies in 2015, Alexander returned to Austria to manage the family’s 130-room hotel, overseeing its three distinct dining outlets. During this time, he became increasingly involved in wine selection, expanding the offerings with wines that reflected a strong sense of place. His curiosity led him to travel extensively, attending major wine fairs such as ProWein and Vinitaly and visiting renowned winemakers across Europe. Recognizing the need for direct access to exceptional wines, he founded Alpine Cellar, an import company dedicated to sourcing wines from classic regions such as Burgundy, Champagne, Tuscany, and Piedmont.
Through Alpine Cellar, Alexander built strong relationships with winemakers and deepened his understanding of how wine is presented and enjoyed. Years of tasting and serving wines led him to question whether existing glassware truly honored the wines he worked with. This realization led to the creation of Grassl Glass in 2018, a collection of mouth-blown, ultralight glasses designed to enhance wine expression while maintaining the durability required in professional settings. Early prototypes gained traction among top winemakers, including Jean-Marc Roulot, who adopted the Liberté shape for his domaine. From this success, the Vigneron collection was born, followed by the Elemental, each designed to complement different wine styles.
In 2022, Alexander’s contributions to the wine industry were recognized when he was named to Forbes’ “30 Under 30 – Europe” list in the Art & Culture category. His expertise in wine and glassware design has since resonated with some of the world’s most respected collectors and professionals, influencing how fine wines are presented and experienced.
Building on this foundation, Alexander and his wife, Mariia, co-founded Amelie, a concept that merges their shared passion for wine with their deep understanding of glassware and hospitality. Today, Alexander is primarily involved in curating and selecting Amelie’s wine portfolio, pairing it with thoughtfully chosen wine accessories and educational materials. His work increasingly focuses on education—guiding both wine enthusiasts and industry professionals in understanding quality wine and the impact of proper glassware. Through tastings, discussions, and collaborations, he continues to shape the way people experience wine, ensuring that every selection and product aligns with Amelie’s philosophy of authenticity, precision, and craftsmanship.
