Dominio del Aguila

Winemaker Profile | Ribera del Duero, Spain

Dominio del Águila is a family-run institution located in La Aguilera, a small village in the Ribera del Duero, Spain. Remarkably the estate established in  2010 by Jorge Monzón and his partner Isabel Rodero is already viewed by many as flagship of the region. Monzón, an experienced winemaker, whose skills were honed at estates none other than Domaine de la Romanée-Conti and Vega Sicilia and Isabel Rodero, an architect, responsible for bringing the estate’s historic 15th-century cellars back to life, have created  something exceedingly special.

The organically farmed vineyards of Dominio del Águila cover 30 hectares of sandy clay, gravel and limestone plots planted to naturally low yeilding, massale selection vines of Tempranillo, Garnacha, Bobal, and Albillo, planted between 150 and 65 years ago. Patience is something that the team at Aguila knows all too well: wines are crafted using traditional methods that impart these wines with unmistakeable character and authenticity. Whole cluster fermentation, foot treading and spontaneous fermentation is followed by long and graceful elevage in the cold centuries old cellars.

The philosophy of the winery is rooted in a profound respect for nature and traditional winemaking methods. The resulting wines could only be described as noble and embodied Jorge Monzón is a craftsman who painstakingly crafts cuvées that could not hail from anywhere else. Reds and Whites alike are to be experienced by serious any lover.

Dominio del Aguila is quite simply a myth in the making.
