Gert Crum

Gert Crum (1948–2024) was a renowned Dutch wine writer and journalist, widely regarded as one of the leading experts on Burgundy and Champagne. Originally trained as a sociologist and briefly working as a university lecturer, he soon turned to his true passion: wine. For over 35 years, he travelled extensively through wine regions around the world, with a particular focus on French wines—especially those from Burgundy and Champagne.

Crum authored several highly acclaimed wine books. His work Le Domaine de la Romanée-Conti, translated into multiple languages, offers deep insight into one of the most prestigious wine estates in the world. The second edition of the book was named the best wine book in the world in 2012.

Another significant work is Champagne: The Future Uncorked, available both in print and as an interactive e-book. The book explores recent developments in the Champagne region, including the rising importance of single-vineyard Champagnes (Champagnes parcellaires), and features detailed maps and profiles of 76 producers.

Crum was not only a writer but also a respected educator and wine tour guide. He organized wine journeys and led tastings, generously sharing his extensive knowledge and passion for wine. His ability to communicate complex subjects with clarity made him a beloved speaker in the wine world.

Gert Crum passed away at the age of 75 after a battle with cancer. His death was met with great sadness across the wine community, and he will be remembered as a passionate ambassador for wine.
