Weinbau Michael Broger
Profile de Producteur | Thurgau, Suisse
Michael Broger was born in 1970 in Thurgau, Switzerland. He is a winemaker who’s sensorial acuity was honed early on in life thanks to a serious appreciation for gastronomy. Winemaking was a natural career choice for Broger who spent several years at various independent wineries both domestically and abroad before establishing his own winery in 2003 on the Ottenberg, above Boltshausen. This idyllic piece of land is where Broger cultivates approximately 3.5 hectares of vines, partly owned and partly leased.
His parcels, that punctuate the steep slopes of the Ottenberg, arguably the most interesting winemaking site in the canton of Thurgau, are primarily planted to Pinot Noir locally known as Blauburgunder and to emblematic Müller-Thurgau. His wines cover a wide range from the "Weissherbst," a delicate summer wine with aromas of exotic fruits, strawberry, and grapefruit all the way to the Ottenberg Blauburgunder 'Alte Rebe’ which is considered by many as one of the finest examples of Swiss Pinot Noir. Broger produces wines of enviable purity, and at their best, of real depth.
Michael Broger places great emphasis on viticulture that respects the local diversity of fauna and flora, cultivating his vines according to biodynamic principles although not officially accredited. He avoids chemical pesticides and relies on manual labor in the steep vineyards to reflect the authenticity of the terroir in his wines. His motto, "Less is more," guides his work both in the vineyard and in the cellar.
Broger produces some of the most characterful and complete wines in Switzerland and should not be missed by any Swiss wine lover.
